Ducks are not chickens, and this is where that stops being a slogan

Most “duck house” plans online are a chicken coop with the word duck in the title. This one isn’t, and the difference is measurable in the spec table above: roost inches, zero.

That single number drives most of the design. Ducks sleep on the floor. They don’t perch, they don’t fly up to a bar, and a heavy bird coming off a raised roost is a bird that can hurt a leg. So there are no roosts and no droppings board, and every square inch those would have taken is floor instead. At 37 square feet, 6 ducks get 6.2 square feet each and 8 get 4.6 — a genuinely roomy house for the footprint, because nothing inside is competing for the space.

Four other things change with it:

  • The nest boxes sit on the floor, not up a wall. A duck will not climb to lay. Four boxes on a 67-3/4 inch bank, at ground level, where a duck will actually use them.
  • The floor is lined, with a drip zone planned around the drinker rather than a hopeful assumption that the floor stays dry.
  • The pop door has a threshold and a ramp, sized for a bird that waddles rather than hops.
  • The ventilation is sized for a duck, not a hen — 4.8 square feet of it.

The ventilation number is the one that surprises people

4.8 square feet of vent across three windows, for 37 square feet of floor. Per bird that’s roughly 86 square inches at eight ducks — around two and a half times what our chicken designs carry per bird.

That isn’t us being cautious for the sake of it. A duck puts far more water into the air of a closed building than a hen does: it drinks more, it carries water in on its plumage, and its droppings are wetter. Vent it like a chicken coop and you get condensation running down the inside of the walls by the second cold morning.

Our sizing rule of 1 square foot of vent per 10 square feet of floor is our own default, not a published standard — we label it that way in every plan set. For ducks we deliberately exceed it. The step up costs roughly $850 and doubles both the house and the run. It also takes you from 48-inch studs to 60 — from a crouch-and-reach to a tall reach-in, which matters more than it sounds when the floor is the thing you’re cleaning.

Plan the clean-out before you build, not after

This is the honest downside of keeping ducks and the reason the last step in the plan is about bedding and routine rather than construction.

A duck house needs stripping more often than a chicken coop of the same size. The floor liner exists so you can do that without soaking the deck underneath, and the drip zone exists so the wet is concentrated in one predictable place instead of spread across the whole floor. Site the drinker there and keep it there.

Two practical consequences at build time. Leave yourself a clear path from the door to the far corner — you’ll be dragging bedding out along it weekly. And don’t slope the floor toward a drain: a sloped floor moves water to where the bedding also ends up, and you get a wet corner rather than a dry house. Flat, lined, and stripped on a schedule beats clever drainage.

Predators: the same rules, one extra problem

Quarter-inch hardware cloth over every opening, screwed through fender washers rather than only stapled, with a 12-inch apron buried down and out around the run. Half-inch mesh is the figure quoted everywhere and it does stop raccoons — but a least weasel goes through anything a quarter-inch or larger, so half-inch doesn’t deliver the exclusion most plans imply. University of Kentucky Extension documents the mechanism in ID-245; the 12-inch apron depth is confirmed independently by Kentucky, Maryland and Florida extension services.

The extra problem is that ducks are worse than chickens at getting themselves in at dusk. They’re slower to go in, less inclined to put themselves to bed, and more likely to settle outside if the door is awkward. That’s why the threshold and ramp get their own step. A ramp that’s too steep is a door that doesn’t get used, and a door that doesn’t get used is a flock sleeping in the run.

The run is doing more work than a chicken run does

96 square feet of run for 6 to 8 ducks — 12 to 16 square feet each, roughly double what the same footprint would give the same number of hens.

That’s deliberate, and it isn’t generosity. Ducks work ground harder than chickens do. They dabble, they push their bills through soft soil, and they carry water out with them, so a duck run turns to bare mud faster than a chicken run of the same size and stocking. More square feet per bird is the only thing that actually slows that down.

Two things follow at siting time. Put the run on the best-draining ground you have, not the corner of the yard nothing else wanted. And accept that the area around any outdoor water will be wet no matter what you do — pick where that is rather than letting the ducks pick for you.

The floor sits 8 inches up, and that is a duck decision too

Our chicken coops raise the floor 12 to 18 inches. This one sits at 8.

A raised floor buys the same things either way: it keeps the structure out of ground moisture and denies rats a cavity underneath. But every inch of height is an inch a duck has to climb, and a duck climbs badly. They don’t hop, they don’t flap up, and a steep ramp is a ramp they’ll refuse — which is how you end up carrying birds in at dusk.

Eight inches is the compromise: high enough to keep the deck dry, low enough that the ramp stays gentle. It’s why the pop door, the threshold and the ramp share a step in the plan rather than being an afterthought bolted to a wall.

Four to five days, and the wet work is at the end

Thirty to thirty-eight hours across four or five days, against two weekends for the 4x6. It’s rated Intermediate rather than Beginner, and the reason isn’t the framing — the shell goes up like any of our shed-roof coops.

It’s the interior. The lined floor, the drip zone, the floor-level nest bank and the threshold detail are all fiddlier than their chicken-coop equivalents, and they all land in the back half of the build when you’re tired of it. What this design deliberately does not do

It is not insulated. It is not a walk-in. It has no pond, no plumbing and no drainage — water management here is a liner, a drip zone and a routine, not a drainage system.

It also won’t suit a mixed flock without thought. Ducks and chickens can share ground, but they don’t want the same house: what’s right here — floor nests, no roosts, a wet zone, heavy ventilation — is wrong for hens, and the reverse is just as true.
