Three hens for $675, or three hens for $1,650

This tractor houses 2-3 hens. So does the 4x4 starter coop. The tractor costs $675-$875 in materials. The starter coop costs $1,650-$2,150.

Same flock, less than half the money. That is the sharpest honest comparison on this site, and it is not a discount. It is a list of things this design does not have.

There is no foundation — no piers, no posts, no levelling. There is no siding past the coop skin at the closed end. There is no permanent floor under the run, because the grass is the floor. Remove those three and most of a coop’s bill of materials goes with them.

What you give up for that price

Start with the obvious. This design has 0 windows and no insulation anywhere. Its whole shelter is a 38-1/2” by 45” skin under a roof at the closed end.

The coop section is 10 square feet carrying 1.6 square feet of vent. That comes from our own default of 1 square foot of vent per 10 square feet of floor. It is our design choice, not a published standard — no extension service prints a geometric ratio at all. What they publish is the outcome: ammonia at bird height under 10 ppm. Then there is the part nobody writes on the sales page. You move this thing, regularly, by hand, in whatever weather you keep hens in. That is the whole point of a tractor and it is also the chore. The chicken tractor guide is the honest overview.

Read the bottom row twice. The 6x10 nearly doubles the coop and doubles the flock for $125-$150 more than this one. The most repeated regret in backyard coop reviews is building too small. Here the upgrade is close to free, so if there is any chance you go past three hens, build the bigger one.

What it does cost is work. The 6x10 is three weekends (22-30 hrs) against this one’s two weekends (14-20 hrs), and it is heavier to push. Run your own numbers through the coop size calculator first.

There is no buried apron, and there cannot be

Every static coop on this site buries a 12-inch hardware-cloth apron around the run perimeter. Kentucky, Maryland and Florida extension services confirm that 12-inch depth independently. This plan has no apron, and the omission is deliberate. You cannot bury a skirt under something you drag across a lawn.

So the defence goes inside instead. Quarter-inch hardware cloth, 19 gauge, runs under the birds. It staples across the underside of the skids and rungs over the whole run section, then up both run slopes and over the handle-end triangle. Twenty-six feet of it comes off a 36-inch roll.

Quarter-inch, not half-inch. Half-inch genuinely stops raccoons. But a least weasel passes through anything a quarter-inch or larger, which University of Kentucky Extension documents in ID-245. The same publication explains why the hole size matters more than the fence line. A raccoon never has to get inside; it reaches through and takes the head of a bird roosting against the mesh.

Fasten with staples every 2 inches and fender washers every 8 inches along every edge. Staples alone pull through, and that is the failure people discover the morning after. More in the predator-proofing guide.

You are the foundation, so know what you are lifting

Straight off the bill of materials this tractor is 296 lb dry and empty. That is the figure a seller quotes. It is not the thing you move.

Put 4 inches of shavings on the coop floor, hang a filled feeder and waterer, and leave it out in the rain overnight. Now it is 375 lb. Flip the wheel arms down and 42 lb of that lands on the grip bar. The other 333 lb stands on two 8-inch wheels, and that is the half nobody costs.

Small wheels on mown turf do not roll so much as climb out of the rut they are making. Reckon 33-67 lb of push — the low end on short dry grass, the high end on soft ground or long grass.

For scale, one hard rule in this business is written down. Joel Salatin, in Pastured Poultry Profits, says a hand-moved pen should not weigh more than 200 pounds. Loaded, this one is 1.9 times that ceiling. One person on firm level ground, two on soft ground or a slope. “One person” should never quietly mean “one large man.”

Why it takes two weekends and not one

15 steps and 28 material line items is a small build. What eats the time is not complexity, it is repetition.

The ribs are the job. There are six of them, each two rafters meeting at the peak. Every rafter is the identical part — a 48-inch 2x2, cut 30 degrees off square at both ends. Build all six flat on the ground off one set of marks before you stand any of them. Marking a jig once and cutting twelve identical pieces is what makes the frame square later.

The day you save is foundation day. A static coop starts with posts, pier blocks and gravel, and beginners routinely lose a whole session there. This one starts with two skids on the grass.

An A-frame has no walls, and the spec table shows it

You will find zeros in the spec table where a coop lists numbers — no stud height, no clear span, no run height. That is not missing data. There are no vertical walls to measure.

The consequences are real. The ridge stands 45-1/16” with a 41-9/16” rise, so nobody is walking in. Access is reach-in, and the plan answers that by hinging the entire right coop slope as a 38-1/2” by 45” cleanout door. You clean this coop standing up, looking down into it, rather than crawling through a hatch. That is unusual on a tractor and it is what keeps the footprint workable.

Inside, 30 inches of roost bar gives three hens 10 inches each. That is the generous end of the range Penn State, Oregon State and Maryland extension publish, not the 6-inch floor. Two nest boxes across a 24-1/2” bank serve three hens comfortably against the 1-box-per-4-to-5-hens ceiling that UC Davis and the welfare bodies agree on.

What this design deliberately does not do

It is not insulated and it has no windows. It will not carry a flock through a hard northern winter on its own. If your ground freezes, this is the wrong family entirely — read the climate guide and look at a static walk-in instead.

It does not grow. Three hens is a hard ceiling at 10 square feet, and an A-frame has no wall to bolt an extension run onto. The 6x10 is a different build, not an upgrade path.
